Britain looks set for the longest run of budget shortfalls since Napoleonic times – pushing the national debt towards £2trillion. The Government last ran an annual surplus – when it earned enough in tax to cover public spending – in 2001 but has been in the red ever since. Borrowing hit a record £152billion in 2009-10 as the last Labour government lost control of the nation’s finances and the deficit was still £46.2billion last year.
